Gynecomastia Surgery

Gynecomastia—enlarged male breast tissue—affects up to 50% of men at some point in their lives. Whether caused by hormones, genetics, weight gain, or medications, this condition can significantly impact self-confidence. Gynecomastia surgery restores a flat, masculine chest contour, allowing you to feel confident in any situation.

Restore Your Masculine Chest

Gynecomastia surgery (male breast reduction) removes excess glandular tissue, fat, and in some cases, skin to create a flatter, firmer, more masculine chest contour. The procedure can be life-changing for men who have struggled with enlarged breasts, allowing them to feel comfortable shirtless, at the gym, and in fitted clothing.

Dr. West has extensive experience treating gynecomastia in men of all ages, from teenagers to mature adults. His approach focuses on achieving natural-looking results with minimal scarring and a quick return to normal activities.

Are You a Candidate?

You may be an ideal candidate for gynecomastia surgery if you:

Have enlarged breast tissue that hasn't responded to diet and exercise

Feel self-conscious about your chest appearance

Avoid certain activities or clothing due to your chest

Are at a stable, healthy weight

Have realistic expectations about results

Are in good overall health

Don't smoke or are willing to quit before surgery

Have completed puberty (for younger patients)

For teenagers, we typically wait until breast development has stabilized, usually after age 17–18, unless the condition is causing significant psychological distress.

Grades of Gynecomastia

Gynecomastia is classified into grades based on severity, which determines treatment approach:

Grade IMinor breast enlargement without excess skin. Treated with liposuction and minimal tissue excision.

Grade IIModerate breast enlargement without excess skin. Requires liposuction and direct tissue excision through areola incision.

Grade IIIModerate breast enlargement with mild skin excess. May require liposuction, tissue excision, and possible minor skin removal.

Grade IVMarked breast enlargement with significant skin excess. Requires comprehensive surgery including tissue excision and skin removal.

The specific techniques used depend on the grade of gynecomastia and amount of excess tissue.

The Procedure

Surgery typically takes 1–3 hours depending on severity. Most patients go home the same day.

Liposuction

Power-assisted or ultrasound-assisted liposuction removes excess fatty tissue through small incisions. Often sufficient for Grade I and some Grade II cases.

Direct Excision

Glandular breast tissue is removed through an incision around the areola edge. This technique is used when firm glandular tissue is present.

Combination Approach

Most cases benefit from combining liposuction and direct excision to remove both fatty and glandular tissue for optimal contour.

Skin Excision

For severe cases (Grade III–IV) with significant skin excess, additional incisions may be needed to remove redundant skin.

Recovery & Results

Most men are pleasantly surprised by how manageable recovery is. Recovery typically includes:

First few days: Mild to moderate discomfort, wear compression vest

Week 1: Most swelling and bruising peaks then begins to subside

Weeks 2–3: Return to desk work and light activities

Weeks 4–6: Resume moderate exercise, continue wearing compression

6–8 weeks: Return to full activities including upper body workouts

3–6 months: Final results visible as all swelling resolves

Most men are pleasantly surprised by how quickly they can return to normal activities.

Engagement in activities previously avoided

Improved physical appearance and emotional well-being

The improvement in both physical appearance and emotional well-being cannot be overstated.

Frequently Asked Questions

Glandular tissue that is removed will not grow back. However, significant weight gain, steroid use, or hormonal changes can cause remaining tissue to enlarge. Maintaining a stable weight helps ensure long-lasting results.
Most incisions are placed at the edge of the areola where they blend in naturally and become barely visible over time. Dr. West uses advanced techniques to minimize scarring.
Most men describe post-operative discomfort as similar to a hard chest workout—sore but manageable. Pain medication is prescribed for the first few days.
Light cardio can typically resume at 2–3 weeks. Upper body and chest exercises should wait until 6–8 weeks post-surgery.
Gynecomastia surgery is typically considered cosmetic and not covered by insurance. However, if there's a documented medical cause or significant psychological impact, some plans may provide coverage.
