What is Liposuction?
Liposuction is a very good procedure for young patients with stubborn areas of fat that persist despite diet and exercise. Liposuction can be performed on various areas of the body including the abdomen, flanks, buttocks, arms, neck and thighs.
During liposuction, a very small incision is made near the area of concern and a fluid mixture of local anesthetic and adrenaline is injected into the area of fat that is to be removed. This provides post-operative pain relief and decreases bleeding during surgery.
A very small cannula (metal tube) is then used to suction the fat out until the desired contour is achieved. The only scars are from the small incisions to access the fat, and no skin is removed. Since no skin is removed, the best patients are those with good skin and no stretch marks.
What is a tummy tuck?
A tummy tuck is a more complex procedure involving the removal of skin and fat in the lower abdomen. The appropriate patient for a tummy tuck is usually someone who has had weight loss or has had children.
Weight loss and pregnancycan both result in excess, loose skin on the lower tummy as well as weakened and separated abdominal muscles.During the surgery, an incision is made in the bikini line of the abdomen so it is well hidden. Through this incision, the abdominal muscles can be tightened and the excess skin and fat can be removed. This results in a sleeker, tighter abdomen.
