Many patients come into our offices with concerns about the appearance of their nipples. Inverted nipples are a common finding in women and can decrease one's confidence and be a cause for emotional stress. An inverted nipple correction procedure can be easily performed for men or women who have a nipple that is retracted into the breast.
While some patients who elect to have an inverted nipple correction surgery may be able to stimulate the nipple so it points outward, many have a nipple that retracts into the breast despite stimulation.
Inverted nipples may be classified into different grades based on how easy it is to pull the nipple out into a normal position:
Nipples that can be easily pulled out. The milk ducts are usually not affected by the inverted nipple. This allows for breastfeeding.
A nipple can be pulled out, yet it is more difficult than Grade 1. Breastfeeding is possible but is often difficult for a mother.
A severely inverted nipple that is difficult, if not impossible, to pull out without surgery.
Procedures to correct inverted nipples have been described as early as 1879. Today there are several popular ways to perform inverted nipple correction surgery. An inverted nipple correction procedure is a relatively simple surgery that may be performed in the office or in the operating room.
For patients who wish to avoid a formal surgical procedure, an alternative is to have one of our plastic surgeons perform a nipple piercing. This simple procedure takes only a few minutes and can provide immediate correction for Grade 1 and 2 inverted nipples. In some patients this may provide long-term correction even after removal of the jewelry.
During your consultation one of the Finesse plastic surgeons will take the time to thoroughly explain the inverted nipple correction procedure with you to make sure all your questions are answered. Our team of plastic surgeons will also discuss what to expect before, during and after an inverted nipple correction surgery. You will learn about how the final result is likely to appear and what kind of scars to expect. The scars for an inverted nipple correction procedure tend to be quite small and blend in very well with the rest of the nipple.
Our patients commonly report that they are very satisfied with the results of their inverted nipple correction surgery. They report improvement in their appearance and self-confidence. Occasionally there is recurrence of the inverted nipple position but this can be addressed with a revision procedure.
