Technical Excellence: Programmatic Color Optimization

On February 14, 2026, we identified and resolved color contrast issues using a mathematical approach that demonstrates our commitment to both accessibility and design elegance.

Challenge: Our elegant theme's primary color (#9B8B7E) had 3.29:1 contrast on white—failing WCAG AA's 4.5:1 minimum.

Solution: We developed a mathematical algorithm using WCAG luminance formulas to calculate the lightest possible compliant color. In 50 iterations, it found #807368 with 4.60:1 contrast—just 2.2% above minimum, preserving elegance while ensuring compliance.

Before

Failed WCAG AA
After (Current)
#807368
4.60:1 ✅
Passes WCAG AA
Dark Variant
#6B5D52
6.34:1 ✅
High Contrast

The visual difference is subtle—maintaining our sophisticated aesthetic—while ensuring readability for users with low vision or in bright lighting conditions.

Automatic Site-Wide Fix

Because we use CSS variables (var(--theme-primary)) throughout our design system, this single color update in theme.config.ts automatically fixed all 15+ affected elements across 7 pages—demonstrating the power of systematic design architecture.

Why This Matters

This mathematical approach ensures we meet WCAG standards with precision—not by over-darkening to "play it safe," but by finding the exact optimal value that balances compliance with design intent. The algorithm is reusable for any future color decisions, making accessibility verification systematic rather than subjective.

Complete Audit Trail & Release Log

This comprehensive log documents every accessibility improvement we've made since November 2025. Each entry includes the implementation date, WCAG criterion addressed, and current status. This demonstrates our continuous commitment to accessibility and systematic approach to compliance.

  • Continuous monitoring: We use automated tools integrated into our development workflow to catch issues before they reach production.

Ongoing Commitment

Accessibility is an ongoing commitment, not a one-time project. Our continuous improvement efforts include:

  • Regular testing with keyboard-only navigation and screen readers
  • Maintaining documentation of accessibility issues and remediation activities
  • Training our team on accessibility best practices and WCAG guidelines
  • Evaluating new features and content for accessibility before deployment
  • Monitoring evolving accessibility standards and updating our practices accordingly
  • Reviewing user feedback and incorporating improvements based on real-world usage

Formal Complaints Process

If you wish to file a formal accessibility complaint, please contact us using the methods listed above. Your complaint should include:

  • Your name and contact information
  • The specific page or feature where you encountered the accessibility barrier
  • A description of the problem and how it affects your ability to access information
  • The assistive technology you were using (if applicable)

We will investigate your complaint promptly and work with you to resolve the issue. You will receive an initial response within 2 business days and regular updates on remediation progress.
