Treating Crow's Feet with Botox

More than 6.6. million Botox® and Botox-like injection procedures were performed in 2014, making it one of the most popular non-invasive cosmetic procedures in the country. Botox was initially approved for cosmetic procedures in 2002, but more recently received approval specifically as a treatment for crow’s feet. A minimally invasive procedure that requires little downtime, Botox can help to remove those wrinkles at the corners of your eyes.

How Does Botox Work?

Botox is made from a type of neurotoxic protein called botulinum toxin. Although this substance can be lethal in high doses, it has been proven safe in multiple clinical trials and rarely results in complications when used as a treatment for lines and wrinkles. A study involving 833 patients led to FDA-approval for Botox as a treatment for crow’s feet.

Crows’ feet are the result of repeated muscle contractions. Smiling and squinting will result in crows’ feet over time. The active ingredient in Botox blocks nerve signals that cause muscles to contract. This helps to reduce the appearance of lines and wrinkles in the area being treated.

What to Expect from Botox Treatments

Botox is injected into the muscles near the crow’s feet lines using a fine needle. The procedure takes just a few minutes and does not require anesthesia. Several injections will be used to treat the crow’s feet. A cool compress will be applied to the treated area following the procedure to minimize bruising.

Patients can generally return to normal activity immediately following the procedure. However, for optimal results, we recommend that patients avoid strenuous physical activity and facial massage for 24 hours.

A small amount of redness or swelling may appear in the treated area following treatment. Results will become apparent within one week and generally last for three to four months. Patients are usually very happy with their results, which produce a smoother, more youthful appearance.
