Gynecomastia Surgery

Gynecomastia is a medical term that originates from the Greek words for “woman-like breasts.” This condition is far more common than many realize. Gynecomastia affects an estimated 40 to 60 percent of the male population. It may affect only one breast or both. Although certain drugs such as anabolic steroids, medications containing estrogen, alcohol, marijuana, etc., and medical conditions including cancer, impaired liver function, to name a few, may cause or contribute to enlarged male breasts, it is widely accepted that a large percentage of cases derive from unknown sources.

Also known as “male breast reduction,” gynecomastia surgery can reduce the look of oversized male breasts and restore a more firm and contoured appearance to the chest.

Our surgeons have helped many men in the Orange County area eliminate the look of their overly large breasts and achieve a chest that is more firm and defined.

Are You A Candidate For Gynecomastia Surgery?

The best candidates for gynecomastia surgery are men in good physical and mental health. Patients should have realistic expectations about the procedure and not view gynecomastia surgery as a form of weight loss.

Good candidates for male breast reduction surgery include men who have one or more of the following conditions in the chest area:

  • A firm disc of tissue under the nipple that may feel like a mass
  • Breasts that are larger than normally expected
  • Excess glandular tissue in one or both breasts

Preparing For Your Gynecomastia Surgery Procedure

Before you undergo gynecomastia surgery, the Finesse Plastic Surgery team will discuss the entire procedure with you in detail and ask you some questions about your personal health. You should refrain from smoking and taking any antiinflammatory drugs, such as aspirin, for at least two weeks before your procedure is performed. Our surgeons will ask you about existing medical conditions, drug allergies, and any previous surgeries that you may have had in order to ensure the safety of your gynecomastia procedure.

Gynecomastia Surgery Procedure

Enlarged male breasts can be reduced by liposuction and/or by cutting out excess glandular tissue. The procedure for male breast reduction takes one to two hours, usually on an outpatient basis, using general or local anesthesia. If excessive glandular tissue, fat and skin is present, it will be removed. Surgery may be performed alone or in conjunction with lipoplasty, where the suction device will typically be inserted through the existing incisions. For the removal of excess fatty tissue alone, liposuction may be all that is needed; in such cases, scars will be small and barely visible.

Gynecomastia Surgery Recovery

When the procedure is complete, the chest will be wrapped with bandages and a specialized compression garment to help minimize swelling. Our plastic surgeons will prescribe medication to alleviate any pain or discomfort that is apparent after the surgery. Generally, patients can return to work in about one week but should refrain from performing strenuous activity or exercise for the first four to six weeks.

Gynecomastia Surgery Results

Over the coming weeks, patients will begin to see their newly contoured chest become more apparent and defined as swelling subsides. Men are usually very satisfied with their new look and feel more confident in their physical appearance. They no longer have to feel embarrassed about taking their shirt off in public or going to places like the beach.
