What is Botox?

A common question we hear from patients is “What is Botox?”

BotoxBotulinum toxin (Botox) is a neurotoxin that is made by a bacterium called Clostridium botulinum. It is responsible for causing botulism, which is usually associated with people being exposed to foods that have not been properly preserved.

Botox is a medical grade version of the toxin Botulinum and has an excellent safety record. It works by blocking the transmission of nerve signals in muscles so they don’t work as effectively.

Botox injectionAt Finesse Plastic Surgery Botox injections are used by our plastic surgeons and physician assistants to relax the facial muscles that cause wrinkling and frown lines. The areas we commonly treat include the forehead, glabella (lines between the eyebrows) and crow’s feet. Our team can also use Botox to improve dimpling in the chin and to smooth bands in the neck.

Botox does not work over night. If you are getting ready for a wedding, reunion or other social event make sure you come in at least one week before because Botox takes up to 10 days for it's full effects to be seen. The results of Botox are temporary, and usually last between three to four months before a repeat treatment is required.
