Treating Inverted Nipples

Treating inverted nipples | Dr. Justin WestInverted nipples are quite common, and can affect one or both breasts. Some women are born with inverted nipples, while some develop it over time. In the vast majority of cases inverted nipples are not associated with any underlying problem.

However, inverted nipples can be associated with benign or malignant breast disease, especially if a nipple becomes inverted over a very short period of time. A physician in some cases may recommend treating inverted nipples after an evaluation.

There is a wide variety of normal anatomy for breasts, areolas and nipples. The colors, shapes and sizes of nipples are quite variable. The amount that a nipple projects also varies widely from person to person, and can vary from one side to the other in the same person.

Inverted nipples can make people feel shy and insecure. Our patients frequently tell us that they feel self-conscious in clothes when one nipple shows through while the other remains unseen. Inverted nipples can also make intimacy difficult.

The good news is that inverted nipples are usually very easy to treat. Small incisions are made around the base of the nipple and any tissue holding the nipple down is released. Sutures are then used to hold the nipples up so they do not invert again. This procedure is typically done in the office under local anesthesia.

Another option is nipple piercing. This option can be a nice alternative for patients with a very mild form of inversion where the nipple can easily be pulled out into a normal position. Patients usually need to wear the jewelry for 6-12 months to get a lasting result.
