Nipple Tattoo After Breast Reconstruction

Nipple Tattoo After Breast Reconstruction

Many breast cancer patients express concerns that they will never have natural appearing breasts again. With advances in breast reconstruction, it is now possible to reconstruct very natural looking breasts.

Creating a realistic nipple is often the final step in this process. After your plastic surgeon reconstructs your new nipple, a tattoo artist can add pigment to the area (nipple-areola tattooing) so it closely mimics the natural color of a nipple and areola.

Nipple-Areola Tattooing - Options

For women who do not wish to have nipple reconstruction, but would like to have a tattoo to add color to the area, an innovative new option is available to patients. This technique, called 3-D tattooing or nipple-areola tattooing, can create the appearance of a projecting nipple.

Using a variety of colors and shading techniques, these specially trained tattooed artists can create nipples and areolas that are hard to distinguish from the real thing. This allows a very natural appearance with the benefit of not worrying about a projecting nipple showing through clothing.

Whether you choose a traditional nipple reconstruction or a newer 3-dimensional technique, nipple-areola tattooing is a great final touch to the reconstructive process. At Finesse Plastic Surgery, we work closely with two tattoo artists with a special interest in nipple-areola techniques.

  • Jeanine McTasney has been performing nipple-areola tattooing for many years and is president of the National Nipple and Areola Tattoo Registry.
  • Brian Evers is a well known tattoo artist who offers 3-dimensional tattoos for our patients.

We take pride in being able to help our patients achieve their goals in breast reconstruction at every stage of the process.  Schedule a consultation today to find out more about the nipple-areola tattooing options available to you.
