Breast Implants: Silicone or Saline?

Saline vs Silicone...Which Is Best for You?

breast implants, silicone or salineDeciding between two similar options is rarely an easy decision. This concept couldn’t be any more difficult for women who are choosing between saline and silicone breast implants. In fact, this decision can be downright confusing since each type of implant offers its own set of benefits.

There are many aspects that should be considered before you decide which implant is right for you. To help in your final decision, we’ve provided some important characteristics about saline and silicone implants below.

Composition

Even though saline and silicone implants may look the same, they consist of completely different materials. Saline implants are composed of an outer silicone shell that are filled with a sterile saltwater solution after they are placed inside the breasts. Silicone implants are made of an outer silicone shell and come prefilled with a silicone gel. Both implants are FDA approved to ensure safety and effectiveness.

Feel

breast implants comparisonSince silicone implants contain a cohesive gel, most patients say that they provide a more natural, softer feel than implants that contain liquid saline. Silicone implants are usually recommended for patients who have naturally thin breast tissue because they are less susceptible to show ripples. The silicone has a texture similar to that of native breast tissue.

Incisions for implant placement will vary from individual to individual, but since saline implants are inserted before filling them, the incisions used are typically a little bit smaller that the incisions used to place gel implants.Cost

Breast augmentation with silicone implants costs more than saline implants, because they have higher research and development costs. This doesn’t necessarily indicate that they are better than saline implants, it just means that it costs the manufacturers more to produce them.
